If you're not interested in the remastered re-release of this cult "moment in time," then help yourself to a download.

The US death metal scene was lost and stagnating around 1995, but this intense demo was a precursor of where the genre was to go. Blood Coven utilize a strong sense for composition while merging the aggressive riffing of the past with skillful dark melodic lead lines. Each song is a chilling journey punctuated by tasteful atmospherics and varied pacing.

Winterlong (US) - Err in Annulus - 1998

ARTIST: Winterlong
ALBUM: Err in Annulus
YEAR: 1998
GENRE: Melodic Death/Doom Metal
COUNTRY: United States
SERVER: Rapidshare
FILESIZE: 29 MB
FORMAT: MP3@128 KBPS

TRACKLIST:

1. Snowfall
2. The Citadel
3. Funeral Calm
4. Err in Annulus
5. Hallow Autumn

I saw these guys play at the Phantasmagoria club in Maryland back in the summer of 1998 and scored this awesome demo after their set. I guess you could say this is a mix between At the Gates and Silent Stream of Godless Elegy, very tasteful death/doom with a strong cello presence and simply incredible guitar melodies! It's a shame this band fell off the face of the earth later on, but I think they were all just students at Penn State at the time.

YEAR: 1997
GENRE: Aggro Death Metal

FORMAT: MP3@128 KBPS

TRACKLIST:

1. Walking Soundless Sleep
2. Head Hate - Affection Disliked
3. What Does Jesus Christ All Mean
4. The Knot Turns and Turns
5. Dream Peace
6. Released Pity
7. Help Escape Me

This is a shockingly good release of late 90s in-your-face metal that predates Slipknot by almost two years! And I must say this is much more consistent musically and serious lyrically than Slipknot's debut, whose first half I actually quite like. Crystal clear production gives the pounding riffs center stage, and then there's the thematic element across the songs of a man going insane. Fantastic last release by Mike "Serial" Greenhall from the mighty Stentor.

FILESIZE: 15 MB

TRACKLIST:

1. Living in Fear
2. Ends Will Meet
3. A Future of Suffering
4. Inhuman Condition

Absolutely ripping death/thrash with crystal clear production by this two-man project out of Rhode Island. It's a shame and a mystery that this was Parricide's only release, as the quality, intensity, and downright evil fun catapulted them to the top of the lost mid-90s US scene. Classick!

Pain's Invention - Enmity - 1996

ARTIST: Pain's Invention
ALBUM: Enmity
YEAR: 1996
GENRE: Dark Death Metal
COUNTRY: United States
SERVER: Rapidshare
FILESIZE: 13 MB
FORMAT: MP3@128 KBPS

TRACKLIST:

1. Path
2. Sequence 2
3. Worm Honey Blur

Their first demo was fairly straightforward gritty death metal, but on Enmity these guys really achieved something special. These three songs capture a band at a time of deep emotional strain, and the songs are a whirling journey of just heavy, dark music. The vocal performance is frantic and tortured. A true highlight of the 90s American underground scene, and tragically the last release from this promising band.

TRACKLIST:

1. Beyond the Gate
2. Home of Darkness

Featuring soprano Janet Rubin on lead vocals, this rare early TTD demo is a rollicking good time of bouncy metal melodies and passionate vocal theatrics! Back in the mid-90s being a metal band was not trendy, so TTD deserves credit for keeping the flame alive during the genre's dark days as well as spearheading its eventual triumphant return to prominence.
